Even as a curious six year old, Yuan loved plants, grasses, flowers, fruits and trees—anything green that sprouted in the soil. During a class field trip to a botanical garden he was fascinated by a peach tree heavy with fruits. He decided then to be an agriculturist. In his classes, he was always asking questions that his teachers called him “Questioning Student.”
